چکیده

English and Japanese differ in the interpretation of disjunction in simple negative sentences. However, the contrast vanishes in a ‘covert’ negative entailment created by the focus operator (only/dake). Experiments with English/Japanese children reveal their sensitivity to the interpretive interaction of disjunction with the focus operator, despite their divergent linguistic input. Our results suggest that disjunction is Boolean inclusiveor in both languages, because disjunction in both languages licenses conjunctive entailments under ‘covert’ negation. The findings also empirically support a nativist approach to the acquisition of semantics, with the semantics of natural language disjunction innately specified, rather than learned from experience.

Don't 'Have a Clue'? Unsupervised Co-Learning of Downward-Entailing Operators

Researchers in textual entailment have begun to consider inferences involving downward-entailing operators, an interesting and important class of lexical items that change the way inferences are made. Recent work proposed a method for learning English downward-entailing operators that requires access to a high-quality collection of negative polarity items (NPIs). However, English is one of the ...

An Acoustic Comparison of Vowel Systems in Adult- Directed-speech and Child-directed Speech: Evidence from French, English & Japanese

This research investigated the role of child-directed speech in the acquisition of vowel systems in a cross-linguistic perspective. In order to determine if vocalic systems are expanded in child-directed speech and if this extension varies crosslinguistically, child-directed speech (CDS) was compared to adult-directed speech (ADS) in three rhythmically different languages: French, English and J...

Children’s Knowledge of Disjunction and Universal Quantification in Mandarin Chinese

Downward entailing linguistic environments license inferences from sets to their subsets. These environments also determine the interpretation of disjunction: Disjunction licenses a conjunctive entailment in the scope of downward entailing operators (Crain 2008, 2012). This leads to a striking asymmetry across languages in the interpretation of disjunction when it appears in the restrictor (dow...

Contrast and covert contrast: The phonetic development of voiceless sibilant fricatives in English and Japanese toddlers

This paper examines the acoustic characteristics of voiceless sibilant fricatives in English-and Japanese-speaking adults and the acquisition of contrasts involving these sounds in 2- and 3-year-old children. Both English and Japanese have a two-way contrast between an alveolar fricative (/s/), and a postalveolar fricative (/∫/ in English and /ɕ/ in Japanese). Acoustic analysis of the adult pro...

A Machine Learning based Textual Entailment Recognition System of JAIST Team for NTCIR9 RITE

NTCIR9-RITE is the first shared-task of recognizing textual inference in texts written in Japanese, Simplified Chinese, or Traditional Chinese. JAIST team participates in three subtasks for Japanese: Binary-class, Entrance exam and RITE4QA. We adopt a machine learning approach for these subtasks, combining various kinds of entailment features by using machine learning techniques. In our system,...
